Tromsø is a vibrating city in northern Norway known for hiking and nothern lights spoting. By keeping these key points in mind and planning ahead, you'll be well-prepared to enjoy an unforgettable outdoor adventure in Tromsø in March!

  1. Daylight Hours

In March, Tromsø experiences increasing daylight hours as winter transitions to spring. However, you can still expect shorter days compared to summer months. Plan your outdoor activities accordingly, and take advantage of the daylight hours for adventures like snowshoeing and dogsledding. Keep in mind that the Northern Lights are typically visible during the darker evening hours. Here is a website to track daylight in Norway.

Telegrafbukta

Telegrafbukta park is located close to the city center and is a popular place year-round among locals and visitors. Here you can barbecue, swim, exercise, play and relax while enjoying the view. It’s a 3km walk from Tromsø center or a 15 minute bus ride with bus 40 & 33.

2. Weather and Clothing

March in Tromsø can still be quite cold, with temperatures ranging from around -5°C to 2°C (23°F to 35.6°F). It's crucial to dress warmly in layers, including thermal base layers, insulated outerwear, waterproof jackets and pants, hats, gloves, and sturdy waterproof boots. Don't forget sunglasses and sunscreen, as the sun can reflect off the snow, causing glare and sunburn.

Kvaloya Husky on Kvaloya Island was a great experience. A small bus picked us up at Tromsø city center.

5. Northern Lights

March is still a good time to catch the Northern Lights in Tromsø. However, it's essential to remember that the auroras are a natural phenomenon, so sightings are never guaranteed. The best chance to see them is on clear, dark nights away from city lights. Consider joining a guided Northern Lights tour for expert insights and the best viewing spots. We saw the lights twice on our own around Tromsø and also booked a tour online.
